How a sweep works
- Site assessment and method statement: On arrival, before any operative enters the search area. Site-specific risk assessment produced and signed off.
- Cordon and signage where required: For public-realm and school sites, the area is signed and cordoned to prevent public access during the sweep.
- Systematic grid sweep: The site is divided into a grid and each section is searched methodically. Sweep coverage is recorded so any area is auditable after the fact.
- Recovery using approved tools: All sharps are recovered using long-handled grabs and tongs never by hand, even with gloves. Recovered items go directly into BS-EN-approved sharps containers.
- Decontamination of any contaminated surfaces: Where bodily fluid contamination is present alongside the sharps, the surface is decontaminated as part of the same visit.
- Inventory of recovered items: Recorded by type and quantity. This goes into the report for the commissioning party useful for council committee evidence, housing safeguarding files, and pattern-of-use monitoring.
- Clinical waste consignment: Sharps containers sealed on-site and tracked through a licensed Environment Agency carrier to incineration.

What Is The Difference Between A Reactive Call-Out And A Scheduled Sweep?
A reactive call-out is a one-off attendance following a reported find. A scheduled sweep is a recurring attendance at an agreed frequency - weekly, fortnightly or monthly - at sites with predictable need. Scheduled work is typically cheaper per visit and gives councils and housing teams a budgetable line item.
What Regulations Do You Work To?
HSE Sharps Regulations 2013 and the Approved Code of Practice for sharps. COSHH 2002 for chemical and biological agents. Environmental Protection Act 1990 for waste handling. Each sweep is carried out under a site-specific RAMS aligned to these standards.
What Happens To The Recovered Sharps?
Recovered sharps are placed in BS-EN-approved sharps containers, sealed on-site, and collected by an Environment Agency licensed clinical waste carrier. Final disposal is by incineration. You receive a consignment note with the carrier's reference and confirmation of disposal.
Can You Produce A Pattern-Of-Finds Report For Our Committee Or Board?
Yes. For accounts and frameworks where we sweep recurring sites, we produce a quarterly pattern-of-finds report covering recovery volumes by location, time-of-day trends, and any changes over time. This is useful evidence for community safety committees, housing safeguarding boards, and grant-funded harm-reduction work.
Are Your Operatives DBS Checked And Vaccinated?
Yes. All operatives attending schools, supported housing and care settings are DBS-checked. Training records and certificates available on request.
Can You Work To Our Procurement Portal And Contractor Onboarding Requirements?
Yes. We can work on vendor onboarding portals. We can also complete client-specific contractor packs.
Can You Sub-Contract Under Our FM Contract?

Will The Public Know We Are Doing This?
We attend in unbranded or discreetly branded PPE, with vehicles that carry the Clean N Bright name but no description of the specific service. For public realm sweeps in busy areas, we will agree the level of cordon and signage with you before attending.
